Canned biscuits are the star of the show here. These donuts are a fun weekend project to make at home without all the fuss.

Reader's note
Donuts are such a treat - especially warm homemade ones. But dough can be tricky so this recipe is the perfect solution. It takes about ~15 minutes of prep, ~45 minutes overall and yields multiple servings.
This was something I tried deep in the quarantine when I was spending time in Texas with my brother. I love how the vanilla bean paste takes the icing to a whole new level. As always, please share feedback or suggestions. If you make this meal, tag me on Instagram at @TexasCookingCityLiving!
Ingredients
Donuts
1 can of biscuits (I used pillsbury grands buttermilk biscuits)
Vegetable oil for frying (you'll need enough to cover around 3 inches of your pan)
Icing
2-3 tablespoons of milk
1.5 cups of powdered sugar
1-2 teaspoons of vanilla bean paste (can use vanilla extract)
Directions
Open can of donuts and use a circle shaped cookie slicer (or honestly you can use a knife) and carve out holes in the biscuit dough. Set aside.
Heat oil over medium heat to about 350 degrees in a large pan (I used a Dutch oven.) No thermometer? No problem! Use a wooden spoon to test the oil temperature. Dip the wooden spoon into the oil - if there is a steady stream of bubbles you are good to go. Aggressive stream of bubbles, you need to turn the heat down.
While the oil is heating, add ingredients for icing in a small bowl and whisk until smooth.
Add donuts to oil and make sure not to crowd the donuts. Depending on the size of your pan, cook about 2 donuts at a time until golden brown which is about 2-3 min per side. Ice and enjoy.
